Mother’s Day
is Both Ancient and New
It’s a
traditional holiday in a changing world. While most Americans honor their mother
and grandmother on Mother’s Day, more than 35 million stepfamilies enjoy their
own traditions. The celebration of motherhood is hardly new; it can be traced
back to the ancient Greek celebration of the Mother of the Gods. However, our
American Mother’s Day celebration is a much newer holiday. In 1907, Ana Jarvis
initiated the holiday to honor the anniversary of her mother’s death. The
holiday was so instantly popular that, by 1914, Woodrow Wilson declared it a
national holiday. This is a great occasion to remember Mom or Grandma with a
lasting gift of jewelry. A specially chosen charm, locket, or any piece of
jewelry set with birthstones of her children, is always a heartfelt gift.

Emerald Green Sets the
Standard

Emerald, the birthstone of May, sets the standard for green. That’s why
gemologists and laypeople alike refer to emerald’s stunning color as “emerald
green.”
The name “emerald” was
derived from the Greek work, “smargdos,” which literally means “green stone."
Today, we know that emerald is the green member of the beryl family, a group of
gems that includes aquamarine as well as the many colors of beryl.
Only the finest qualities of
emerald are transparent. Most are clouded by internal inclusions called “jardin,”
as they resemble foliage under magnification. However a deep green
included emerald will be more valuable than a clear, pale stone of equal weight.
Often fashioned in “step” or
“emerald-cut,” the emerald makes a perfect May birthday gift and is also the
official gift for the 20th and 35th marriage anniversary.
